            <title><![CDATA[Banning laptops in media classes without being a Luddite]]></title>

            <description><![CDATA[A new media journalism professor in the U.S. has decided to ban laptops in some of his media classes.&nbsp;<br/>Jeremy Littau says he loves technology, but the evidence is&nbsp;building&nbsp;that&nbsp;student test scores improve in classes where laptops are banned.&nbsp;He is also&nbsp;concerned about what he calls "the halo effect."<br/><br/>"When a student has a laptop open, invariably the cone of people next to and behind that student get caught up watching as well. The movie playing or the Facebook page on the screen can be a huge distraction to both those students and to me."<br/><br/>He outlines his new "soft ban" <a href="http://www.jlittau.net/?p=1101" target="_blank">on his blog</a>. Other J-profs may find his thoughtful arguments and approach worth following.]]></description>

            <title><![CDATA[U.S. J-School considers a professional fee]]></title>

            <description><![CDATA[The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkley is considering a new, professional fee for its program.<br/><br/>The School is considering charging its new students an additional&nbsp;$5,000 over and above their tuition, similar to those charged by&nbsp;other professional programs in law, business and medicine. <br/><br/>In a letter to incoming students, the dean, Neil Henry, says the fee is necessary to offset university budget cuts.<br/><br/>"We are proposing this because budget cuts to the University of California have hurt our ability to provide the best program possible and keep pace with technological advances that are transforming our craft and industry."<br/>&nbsp;<br/>]]></description>
